Brakes are not a system to run to failure. Pads worn to metal chew up rotors and turn a cheap job into an expensive one, a sticking caliper drags and cooks itself, and old moisture-soaked fluid can fade under hard braking right when you need it most. On heavier and higher-horsepower cars, the brakes work harder and the margin for neglect is smaller.
